Data protection is an important topic on the Internet. The legal framework conditions are subject to constant change and search engines such as Google & Co will also expect website operators to encrypt data traffic between users and servers in the future.
Google Chrome warns visitors about unsafe websites
Since October 2017, the Google Chrome browser has displayed a warning message as soon as a website contains input fields but does not have HTTPS encryption. This means that there is an urgent need for action for many website operators, as such a message can have a negative impact on visitor trust.
Encrypted data transfer using SSL certificate
Every regular web page is accessed via HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). This protocol regulates the data transfer between the server and the visitor’s browser. HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) is the secure variant, which transmits the data in encrypted form. For the connection via HTTPS to function correctly, an SSL certificate must be integrated on the web server.
Improved ranking through SSL encryption
The security of user data is important. This applies not only to the website operator, but also to Google. The search engine has an interest in directing its users to trustworthy and secure websites. Websites that are encrypted with an SSL certificate therefore usually achieve better rankings on Google than would be the case without an SSL certificate.
What should website operators do now?
We recommend that our customers install an SSL certificate, because on the one hand it creates an increase in trust on the part of the visitor and on the other hand the “trust factor encryption” can also have a positive effect on the ranking in the search results.
